D.I.C.K: My Mindset and My Amends
So, I'm going to keep this short, sweet, and to the point regarding this blog point. As many of you know by now, I recently released a movie called D.I.C.K, a story about an absolute manchild who ran his own authoritarian country from his backyard. My thought process was to try and satirize the idea of dictatorships and fascist regimes by using a complete loser as a sort of "avatar" for these awful rulers, and when I first wrote it, I thought it was funny. I thought it was a perfect fit for the dark comedy genre and went from there.
In retrospect, I should have completely rewritten the whole movie, because put simply, this movie wasn't very good. Like at all. In fact, I will go as far as to say, that this is now, in my opinion, the worst movie I have ever written for this studio. From the main character that makes Sade look tame, to the supporting cast that gets wasted thanks to all the nonsense that goes on during the movie, the hamfisted way I tried to work with the concept, and the awful attempts at "comedy", there is nothing redeeming of this movie.
While Rookie's Road was jumbled up, it did have some nice comedic moments here and there, Infinity may have been cheesy and over-the-top, but it's also pretty fun to watch everything happen, Corndog had that awful choice for the lead role and was a little loose with the rules of baseball, but the content itself was inoffensive and cute, The Youngest Hart had two awful antagonists, but it's intentions were pure. D.I.C.K had none of that. The one good thing I can say about that is the casting, they all worked their asses off trying to make the most out of a broken script and I regret not looking it over and making further changes. That's why I want to apologize to everyone here and the cast of D.I.C.K for putting them in such a horrid position. The cast was set up to fail from the start thanks to this script and you got a bad product as a result.
As a writer for the studio, I pride myself on putting the best product possible while considering all factors for the movie in question. I didn't do that here, and as such, I have to take it on the chin and accept whatever consequences come my way regarding D.I.C.K. So, here's what's going to happen. I had planned to go part-time after finishing three more projects. That will be pushed back because I plan to give every actor involved in D.I.C.K a film of their own to make amends. They will be the leads and hopefully, be given a better movie to sink their teeth into. I will play into their strengths as best I can, working with them to see what fits and what can be avoided. Chris Morris will also be getting another movie to direct as he deserved far better than this.
On a final note, I will say that the failure of D.I.C.K has brought me some distress, to the point where I seriously considered disowning this film entirely. But, I also believe that doing so is a cowardly move, especially since you've already put it out there. What I will tell you is that I am withdrawing D.I.C.K from the Golden Reel Awards because frankly, it doesn't deserve to be considered for any awards. I would prefer this movie be forgotten about quick, especially since I have two movies that are much better than what this turned out to be coming forth later this season. You deserve better and you will get better, simple as that.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some concepts to write out. See you for Victims.
